Someone’s Gotta Do It
By John Cosper
Toby and Clark - Two of David’s other brothers
Toby and Clark sit at a table eating the tacos.
TOBY: I forgot how good Mom’s tacos are.
CLARK: I know. All this army food is so nasty. I missed these.
TOBY: I miss everything Mom makes. Her chicken marsala, her lasagna, her meatloaf.
CLARK: Ugh, I don’t like her meatloaf. You know she puts squirrel in there?
TOBY: You’re kidding!
CLARK: It’s for Dad’s diet. She says they’re low in cholesterol.
TOBY: There’s no squirrel in this, is there?
CLARK: Does it taste like squirrel?
Toby takes another bite.
TOBY: Nope. Just tastes like home.
CLARK: You said it!
TOBY: So who do we have to thank for this?
TOBY: David? Dad let David come up here?
CLARK: Yeah, that’s his plate of tacos right there. Dad just wanted to know how we were doing.
TOBY: Well how about that? Where did he go?
David runs in.
DAVID: Clark!! Do you know what’s going on out there?
CLARK: There he is now.
TOBY: Davy boy! Thanks for the tacos.
DAVID: You’re welcome. Now grab your swords and get out here.
Toby and Clark stand.
CLARK: What’s going on? Are we moving out?
DAVID: There’s a giant out there!
TOBY: He’s back? HE’S BACK??????
Toby jumps in Clarks arms, crying.
CLARK: Shhh, take it easy. He can’t see us inside the tent.
DAVID: You mean you know??
CLARK: His name is Goliath. He’s been out there every day.
DAVID: Has he been making fun of our God every day?
CLARK: Pretty much.
TOBY: I’m so scared, Clark!
DAVID: So why hasn’t anyone done anything?
CLARK: See for yourself.
TOBY: We’re afraid of him. He’s a giant! A killer! It’s crazy to go out there against him!
DAVID: Someone has to do it. I think God wants one of us to do it.
CLARK: Not me.
TOBY: Me either!
CLARK: If God wants someone to take him out, he can do it himself.
DAVID: That’s not how God works. God needs us to be his hands and feet. He needs me.
Clark drops Toby.
TOBY: Did David just say he wants to fight the giant?
CLARK: You can’t go out there against him. He’ll squash you.
TOBY: And we’ll have to explain it do Dad!
DAVID: He can’t lay a hand on me, not if God is on my side.
TOBY: You did see how huge those hands are, right?
DAVID: I know he’s big. And he’s definitely scary. But I can’t sit back and wait for someone else to do it. I’m going to fight the giant!
CLARK: Don’t be a fool, David! Come back!
TOBY: Well, I guess you know what this means.
CLARK: Yeah. I guess David won’t be eating his tacos.
Clark and Toby both grab one of David’s tacos and eat them.
