The Chosen One
By John Cosper
Mike- The chosen one
Mike sits on stage, staring up at the sky.
MIKE: Wow. This is such a big world. So many people, so many problems. I wish I could do something to help, but what can I do? I’m just one guy. I can’t change the world. But I sure wish I could.
Sound effect of a UFO landing.
MIKE: (“sees” a UFO land just off stage) Whoa! I can’t believe it! Is that... Yes it is! A flying saucer! A real flying saucer!
The Chooser enters in a funky, spacey costume.
CHOOSER: Greetings, Chosen One.
MIKE: Who, me?
CHOOSER: I have traveled across the galaxy to choose you for a gift of great power.
MIKE: Who are you?
CHOOSER: I am... the Chooser!
MIKE: The Chooser? That’s the best they could do?
CHOOSE: I choose the ones to receive the gift of the ring.
MIKE: A ring, huh?
CHOOSE: Not just any ring. The ring of awesome power.
The Chooser holds out a ring. Mike grabs it.
CHOOSER: As the Chooser, it is my job to find those who will not only receive it with gratitude, but use it to-
MIKE: So what do I do, like put this on and turn all green or something?
CHOOSER: Uhh, no, actually. But it will give you super strength.
MIKE: Super strength?
CHOOSER: So that you can--
MIKE: Beat up that jerk in the school lunch room who keeps taking my seat?
CHOOSER: No, actually. You can use it to help others.
MIKE: Can it shoot lasers?
MIKE: Like if I aim it at something and say, “fire!”
Sound effect of a laser blast and explosion.
MIKE: Wow! That was awesome!
CHOOSER: You blew up that guy’s truck!
MIKE: I know!
CHOOSER: That’s not what the ring is for!
MIKE: Are you sure?
CHOOSER: Of course I’m sure! I’m the Chooser. I chose to give you the ring, and I expect you to give back.
MIKE: To you?
CHOOSER: To everyone. Give to those in need. Give to your family in friends. Use the ring of awesome power to serve others, not--
MIKE: Will this thing make me fly?
MIKE: Will it make me fly?
CHOOSER: Of course! It will also allow you to breathe under water, run at great speeds, and do fractions without showing your work, but the whole reason I gave it to you is so you would--
MIKE: I gotta try this out! Look at me, I can fly!
Mike runs off.
CHOOSER: Out of everyone, I chose you. I gave you a gift you could never afford or earn. Is it so much to ask that you give back to others in return?
