Here's a great scene to challenge your kids, teens, or adults to really put their faith in action this year. Time to get off the bench (and Facebook) and get our hands dirty.
Acting For God
By John Cosper
CHARACTERS
Lila- A child “actress”
Toby- Lila’s slightly goofy friend
Toby is on stage, reading a book. Lila runs on with two scripts in her hands.
LILA: Toby! I’m so glad to see you!
TOBY: You are?
LILA: Toby, I need help! I was supposed to do a skit this morning with Jeremy, but he got sick and bailed on me!
TOBY: Oh no! We better go help him!
LILA: What?
TOBY: If Jeremy’s sick, he may need some medicine!
LILA: What? No, Jeremy doesn’t need help. I do!
TOBY: Are you sick?
LILA: No!
TOBY: Then I think Jeremy needs help more than you.
LILA: Forget about Jeremy! He’s fine!
TOBY: But he needs someone to take care of him!
LILA: His mom will take care of him!
TOBY: He needs medicine!
LILA: His mom has medicine!
TOBY: Does she have ginger ale?
LILA: What??
TOBY: When I get sick, my mom always lets me drink ginger ale.
LILA: I’m sure has plenty of ginger ale.
TOBY: What about a barf bucket?
LILA: Toby! I need someone to take Jeremy’s part in the skit!
TOBY: You want me to find an actor for you?
LILA: No, I want you to BE an actor!
TOBY: Me? An actor?
LILA: Yes!
TOBY: Like Johnny Depp?
LILA: Sure, yes, whatever. Just take this script, and memorize it so we can do it in church!
TOBY: What’s my part?
LILA: You play the part of a boy who wants to serve God.
TOBY: Cool, I can do that.
LILA: Good.
TOBY: Because I want to serve God.
LILA: I know you do.
TOBY: So who will you be?
LILA: I will play the poor homeless girl who needs someone to feed her. It’s a very dramatic role, one I was born to play. And you will come along and feed me.
TOBY: Can’t you feed yourself?
LILA: No! I’m homeless! I need someone to come and help me!
TOBY: But there’s donuts in the lobby. Didn’t you see them this morning?
LILA: I don’t mean in real life! I’m only pretending to be homeless and hungry in the skit.
TOBY: Why?
LILA: So people will see that as Christians, we need to go out and feed the people who really, truly can’t feed themselves!
TOBY: Well that’s silly.
LILA: Silly? What do you mean it’s silly?
TOBY: Why are we doing a skit about it? Why don’t we actually go an feed the hungry?
LILA: You mean us? You and me?
TOBY: Sure! There’s a group here at the church that goes to the homeless shelter every week. We can go with them. *
LILA: Well, I...
TOBY: We can also bring old clothes and blankets we no longer need to donate. Oh! And we can get other people to donate as well.
LILA: But I...
TOBY: And we can even work in the homeless pantry and hand out the food that the church collects.
LILA: Toby!
TOBY: Then instead of acting like we care, we can really care and serve the homeless!
LILA: But I can’t serve the homeless.
TOBY: Why not?
LILA: Because. I’m an actress. I act for God.
TOBY: You act for God?
LILA: That’s right. I act for God.
TOBY: Can you think of any better way to act for God than to go out and serve the people he loves?
